Conductive primer turns a nonconductive substrate into the electrical reference that Electronic Leak Detection needs. Rolled or sprayed onto prepared plywood, insulation or cover board immediately below the waterproofing membrane, it creates a conductive layer without compromising membrane adhesion.
Supplied as TruGround® Conductive Primer in 5 gallon pails. Water-based. UL listed and FM approved.
Coverage — check your substrate first
- Smooth surfaces: approximately 1,250 SF per pail (250 SF per gallon, 3/8 in nap roller).
- Plywood, lightweight concrete and open-cell insulation: these substrates require two coats. Budget approximately 625 SF per pail.
If the substrate colour shows through the primer, coverage is insufficient and more is needed.

This does not replace your adhesives or primers
Conductive primer is not a substitute for the adhesives and primers your assembly requires. Those are applied after the conductive primer has been applied and is fully dry. Anything applied over it must go on once it is dry to the touch.
Do not let it freeze
Freezing will split the pail open. Store above 45°F. If you are ordering into cold weather, plan delivery and on-site storage accordingly — product damaged by freezing in transit or on site cannot be warranted.
Application
Mixing: always mix thoroughly before use. Inverting the pail for five minutes before opening, then mixing with a drill and paddle, brings settled solids back into suspension. Product that will not mix to a consistent liquid must be discarded.
Rolling: use a 3/8 in nap roller on an extension pole. Remove excess on a tray or cage and overlap strokes for complete coverage.
Spraying: apply in a steady pattern with 3 in overlaps.
Continuity between boards: where joints exceed 1/8 in, brush primer into the T-joints so continuity carries from board to board. Continuity bonding is also required at horizontal-to-vertical transitions.
Test connection point: coat the sides of all metallic penetrations — drains, HVAC units, vents — while priming the substrate. If there are no metallic penetrations in the area, a grounding object must be fastened to the structural deck, connected by coating its side with primer, then flashed per the membrane manufacturer's requirements.
